Shri Hemkund Sahib, Uttrakhand

Been there recently?

Hemkund Sahib
Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib is a revered Sikh pilgrimage site in the Himalayas of Uttarakhand, India, linked to Guru Gobind Singh’s previous life meditations.
Religious Origins
Guru Gobind Singh describes in the Bachitar Natak of the Dasam Granth how he practiced penance at “Hemkunt Parbat,” a mountain with seven prominent peaks called Sapt Shring, where he worshipped intensely before God sent him to earth. This site, near a glacial lake at over 15,000 feet, is believed to be where he attained spiritual union with the divine in a prior incarnation.
Discovery and Construction
The location was identified in the 1930s by Pandit Tara Singh Narotam and later by Sohan Singh, who, inspired by Bhai Vir Singh, built the first small stone gurdwara by 1936 with help from Modan Singh. A larger modern gurdwara was constructed starting in the mid-1960s under Major General Harkirat Singh, with design by Architect Manmohan Singh Siali. The first organized Sikh pilgrimage (jatha) reached there in 1952.
Pilgrimage Development
Hemkund Sahib draws thousands of pilgrims annually, especially from May to October, via a trek from Govindghat, embodying Sikh devotion amid harsh terrain. An ancient Hindu temple nearby was also enlarged during early construction as a gesture of respect.
